Chitting:  A process  by which the seeds potatoes are encouraged to grow before planting. This can be done five or six weeks prior to planting out. Stand tubers in a container, egg boxes are ideal. Stand tubers blunt end up. Wait for shoots are about 1 inch long.

Drill: A narrow straight furrow into which seeds are sown.

Half Hardy:  A rough guide is that a plant that is said to be half hardy can survive temperatures of zero degrees centigrade.  

Hardy: A rough guide is plants that are hardy can survive temperatures of minus fifteen degrees centigrade.  

Harden Off: The process by which a plant gets acclimatised to its environment. 

Maturing Process: Roughly a two week process in which the strawbale is fed and watered so that it is ready to plant and sow in. Explained fully on our

Maincrop: The principal crop of that season.

Rootbound:  A plant that has grown too big for its container resulting in tangled roots.
